Metal Halide lighting is extremely bright lighting and is used in a number of different applications.  They work well in aquarium settings. For instance, if you enjoy keeping anemones, clams or beautiful corals like millepora or acropora, metal halide lighting is a good option.

Metal halides fall into two categories: double ended and single ended. The single ended type is also known as mogel based lighting. These types of metal halide bulbs are recommended to be replaced approximately every nine to twelve months.

If you are planning on using metal halide aquarium lighting, plan on using a bulb for every two feet the tank is long. Of course, the wattage of these bulbs depends on aquarium depth.  For a rule of thumb, aquariums that are 22 inches in depth or less, plan on 175 watt bulbs. If the tank is 22 up to 28 inches in depth, use a 250 watt bulb. Anything deeper than 28 inches really needs a 400 watt bulb.

The A1E4, HQI Metal Halide Lighting model HAM-A1E4  systems such as lighting for aquariums, pets that are aquatic are featured at  OpenTip.com.  For instance the 14k, 250watt HQI Reefstar is what is referred to as a low profile metal halide system. It runs on one HQI halide lamp that is a 14K, 250 watts and is double ended. The Bulb is included in the system. The metal halide light brightens the aquarium with an ice blue crisp bright color that works great in reef tanks. The light system is resistant to corrosion and is also light weight. Besides the bulb, the unit also comes with a glass lens that is tempered, a ballast that is remote HQI and a hammertone reflector. The entire system is set up to hang above the tank. The wires to hang the system on the side of the aquarium are included.  The dimensions of the system are 10.25 inches wide by 16.5 inches long by 3.5 inches high. It is priced at $262.44.
While metal halide lighting is not cheap, if you are going to really enjoy an aquarium, having the correct type of light to enhance the discovery and enjoyment of your corner of the sea world is really the best kept secret.
